35 people have been killed due to lightning strikes in Cambodia in the first four months of 2013. The death toll is up 40 percent from the same period last year which saw 25 deaths.

Another 24 people have been injured during the January-April period of this year, and many of the victims are from rural areas, said Keo Vy, chief of the Cabinet of the National Committee for Disaster Management.

People should stay at home when there torrential rains with storms and lightening to avoid any dangers, as shown on April 28, where 8 people from different areas died from lightning strikes in only one day.

Cambodia has one of the highest rates of death by lightning accounting for 7.8 deaths per million and last year, lightning killed 103 Cambodians and injured 72 others.

Lightning strikes becomes more prevalent during period between March and November.
